We hire students (not only Computer Science, but students with a wide variety of majors) to work for Information Services. Starting pay for Microcomputer Consultants is $8.50 an hour, with raises up to $9.00 an hour after a trial period and satisfactory work evaluations. Starting pay for our Departmental Student Apprentices is $9.00 an hour, which is raised to $10.00 an hour once sent to their assigned departments.
Students can work up to 20 hours per week, depending on scheduling and availability. Some positions require a minimum of 15 hours per week. We are looking for people able to make a commitment for at least a year, including summers. There can be exceptions to the full-year requirement, depending on our staffing levels.
Duties: Provide microcomputer support to UO students, faculty, staff and departments. Questions from customers cover a wide variety of topics, including virus and spyware removal, wireless configuration, home networking, email client configuration, password and quota problems and failure evaluations.
See our sample interview questions to give you some idea of the type of knowledge we are looking for.
These students serve as consultants who answer users questions about microcomputer hardware and software. They troubleshoot problems, remove viruses and spyware, and assist with Windows and Macintosh network connectivity, operating systems, and applications. They staff the consulting area of the Microcomputer Support Center (151 McKenzie Hall), answer the consulting phone line, and respond to questions via email. For more information on services we provide, please read our Microcomputer Services Overview page.
Level Two Consultants serve as second level technical support to employees working at the Help Desk in 151 McKenzie Hall. We seek employees with a high level of maturity, technical competence and customer service skills for this position. In most cases, we don't hire externally for level two technicians but rather promote our best level one technicians.
Departmental student consultants work as on-site resources to campus departments, assisting with Macintosh, PC, and network-related questions. They provide basic installation and troubleshooting help for microcomputer hardware and software configurations and network connections, as well as answer common questions about prevalent applications in their department or geographical area. These consultants do not support individual projects or provide programming or development work. Departmental consultants are trained by Microcomputer Services. After training, the consultants maintain some consulting duties at Information Services and will receive ongoing training while employed.
The Departmental Student Apprentice positions are self-starting positions. This means that we expect the student be able to talk with departmental contacts, faculty, staff, and students on their own to advertise their services and arrange their schedules.
